Taumarunui Fly In – 13th to 16th December.

December 13, 2019 - December 16, 2019

Taupo Gliding Club is organizing a four day weekend away to Taumarunui from 13 to 16 December 2019.

Accommodation:

There are two hotels in town which are away from the traffic noise and walking distance to food and drink and there is the Holiday Park just before town. The holiday park is about 7km from the airfield and 3km from town.

The hotels – Twin Rivers – contact Rose – 07 895 8063. Alexander Spa – contact Allan – 07 895 8501. Make bookings for the hotels directly, not the web site and mention that you are with the Taupo Gliding Club.

The holiday park – contact Fiona – 07 895 9345. The holiday park has recently been taken over by new owners and they are keen to do well. The cabins and amenities are in good clean condition and there is a good camp kitchen.

Things to Do If or When You’re Not Flying

Nestled in green hills at the junction of the Whanganui and Ongarue Rivers, Taumarunui’s rich history starts with early Māori (who named it ‘the place of big shelter’) and rolls through the railways and associated pioneering industries of coalmining, forestry and farming.

Today this vibrant town is the launching point for a raft of outdoor activities, including Whanganui River canoe trips and trout fishing for which the area is world-famous. Other options include mountain biking through Pureora Forest on the Timber Trail, and taking the famous railcart trip with Forgotten World Adventures. Railway enthusiasts may also want to check out the engineering marvel known as the Raurimu Spiral, not far away.

Forgotten World Rail Car Tours — Blazing Paddles — Epic Cycle Adventures — Forgotten World Jetboat — Canoe Hire — Taumaranui Golf Club — Nevalea Alpacas

Airfield / Aircraft:

We will have the use of the aero club facilities which has a suitable club room and amenities. We plan to take the Pawnee and GTG and of course the ASW28 and PW5. Trial flights will also be available.

The weekend is planned to be a social event for everyone not just the pilots. It will be a great chance to fly from somewhere different and to check out what sight seeing there is around Taumarunui.
