Vale Ivan Galbraith Evans

Gliding NZ regrets to advise that Ivan died on Wednesday 12 July, at home surrounded by his family.

As with everything he did, Ivan was very pragmatic in setting about organizing his funeral to be how he wanted it.  He and a friend made his coffin in the last few weeks of his ill-health, and his granddaughter and eldest daughter decorated it with messages from close friends and family, and paintings of his glider over Mt Cook.

Ivan first flew at Omarama as a teenaged air cadet almost 70 years ago.  He was a foundation member and CFI of the Nelson Gliding Club, and a Regional Operations Officer for Gliding NZ for some years.  Ivan won several National Championships over a 30-year period, and represented NZ in World Gliding Championsips in the USA in 1970 and in France in 1978.

Ivan was certainly one of our real characters in gliding and his friendship will be sorely missed.
